Throughout the epic, Beowulf is manifested as the protagonist. Beowulf is a very powerful and courageous Geatish hero who possesses superhuman qualities. He battles Grendel, Grendel's mother, and the dragon. Beowulf is the perfect warrior while he is young and a perfect king in his old age. Beowulf's death, followed by the battle with the dragon was celebrated by his people. Beowulf's last wish was to have a tower built by the sea to guide ships away from the shore.

Grendel is a cruel, animal-like creature who dwells in the swamp. He terrorized Herot Hall and killed many Danes before Beowulf arrived to defeat him. His motivations seem to be jealousy because he is an outcast from the Danes who is exiled to the swamp.

Grendel's Mother:
A monster that dwells in the swamp and is the root of all evil. She battles Beowulf to avenge her son's death. She lives at the bottom of the lake which isn't the bottom of a lake at all, it is the portal to an underworld that is supposed to be Hell. She is much stronger and more powerful than Grendel and she is not so easily defeated by Beowulf.

The dragon guards mounds of treasure in a tower from all creatures. When a slave steals a jeweled cup from the treasure pile, the dragon is awoken and starts to destroy the village. The dragon fatally wounds Beowulf and is finally defeated by Wiglaf.

King Hrothgar:
Hrothgar is the very fair and generous king of the Danes. He is a role model for the type of king that Beowulf becomes. He builds Herot Hall for his people and is beyond frustrated when Grendel attacks the mead hall on and off for 10 years.

Wiglaf:
A young warrior who assists Beowulf in the battle with the dragon. Unlike Beowulf's other warriors, Wiglaf follows the heroic code and proves himself worthy as Beowulf's successor.
